- Early Reading – building secure phonics knowledge and a love of reading
- Personal Development – helping children regulate emotions, build relationships and develop independence
- Knowledge-Rich Learning – using carefully planned themes and ‘big questions’ to develop vocabulary and understanding
- Preparation for Year 1 – supporting a smooth and successful transition into Key Stage 1
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build progressively over time.
Big Ideas: Our Learning Journey in EYFS
From understanding ourselves to caring about our world.
Each half term, learning in EYFS is guided by a Big Question that sparks curiosity and connects learning across all areas of the curriculum. These questions are carefully sequenced to take children on a journey – from understanding themselves, to connecting with others, to exploring the wider world, and ultimately to caring for it.
Through rich experiences, high-quality interactions and meaningful play, we are committed to excellence and happiness for all, supporting children to become confident, curious and capable learners.
Autumn 1This is MeWho am I? Big Idea: Me Children develop a strong sense of self, learning to talk about who they are, their families and their feelings. They begin to build confidence in communication, form relationships and understand that they are part of a class community. |
Autumn 2Let’s CelebrateHow do we celebrate? Big Idea: Community Children begin to look beyond themselves, exploring celebrations, traditions and special times. They recognise similarities and differences between people and develop respect for others and the communities they belong to. |
Spring 1What a Wonderful WorldCan a polar bear and a penguin be friends? Big Idea: World Children extend their understanding to the wider world, exploring different environments and learning how animals and people live in different places. They begin to compare and make connections between what they already know and new experiences. |
Spring 2A Sky Full of StarsIs there anything above the clouds? Big Idea: Beyond Children explore concepts that go beyond their immediate experience, such as space, light and dark. They begin to ask deeper questions, explain their thinking and develop curiosity about how the world works. |
Summer 1That’s LifeAre minibeasts like me? Big Idea: Life Children develop their understanding of living things, exploring growth, change and life cycles. Through observation and first-hand experiences, they learn about caring for living things and begin to make connections to their own lives. |
Summer 2Beyond the SeaHow can we look after our planet? Big Idea: Responsibility Children apply their understanding of the world to recognise the importance of caring for the environment. They begin to understand the impact of human actions and develop a sense of responsibility for protection the world around them. |
