Curriculum Information

Our Early Years curriculum is designed to provide strong foundations for lifelong learning. We prioritise:

  • Communication and Language – developing confident speakers and attentive listeners
  • Early Reading – building secure phonics knowledge and a love of reading
  • Personal Development – helping children regulate emotions, build relationships and develop independence
  • Knowledge-Rich Learning – using carefully planned themes and ‘big questions’ to develop vocabulary and understanding
  • Preparation for Year 1 – supporting a smooth and successful transition into Key Stage 1

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build progressively over time.

Big Ideas: Our Learning Journey in EYFS

From understanding ourselves to caring about our world.

Each half term, learning in EYFS is guided by a Big Question that sparks curiosity and connects learning across all areas of the curriculum. These questions are carefully sequenced to take children on a journey – from understanding themselves, to connecting with others, to exploring the wider world, and ultimately to caring for it.

Through rich experiences, high-quality interactions and meaningful play, we are committed to excellence and happiness for all, supporting children to become confident, curious and capable learners.

Our approach to teaching

At Rossett Acre, we know that high-quality interactions are key to successful learning in the Early Years.

Our teaching is underpinned by evidence-informed approached:

  • SHREC approach (from Educational Endowment Foundation), where adults skilfully share attention, respond to children and expand and extend conversations to develop language and communication skills.
  • Sustained Shared Thinking - developing deep thinking through meaningful dialogue.
  • Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised - a systematic, high-quality phonics programme
  • Mastering Number (NCETM) - building strong mathematical understanding through practical structured learning
  • Drawing Club - developing vocabulary, imagination and early writing through storytelling

Our learning environment

We provide a calm, purposeful and well-organised environment where children learn independently and collaboratively.

Our provision includes:

  • Carefully planned indoor and outdoor learning spaces
  • Continuous provision that encourages exploration, creativity and problem-solving
  • Clear routines that promote independence and responsibility
  • Opportunities for both adult-led and child-initiated learning

Children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through consistent expectations such as:

“Choose it, use it, put it away.

Assessment and Outcomes

We use assessment to support and enhance children’s learning. This includes:

  • The Reception Baseline Assessment at the start of the year
  • Ongoing observational assessment
  • Regular reviews of children’s progress
  • Early identification of children who may need additional support

Our strong provision ensures children make good progress from their starting points and are well prepared for Year 1.

Transition into Reception and Year 1

We place great importance on ensuring a smooth and supportive transition for all children.

Children join us from a wide range of settings, and we work closely with families and providers to ensure a positive start through visits, transition sessions and close communication with parents and carers.

As children move into Year 1, Reception and Year 1 colleagues work closely together to ensure continuity in teaching, routines and learning, helping children move confidently into the next stage of their educatio
