In Early Years, children sing songs, make music and dance and experiment with ways of changing them through the Early Learning Goal 16 Exploring Media and Materials.

Vision for Music
At Rossett Acre, our ethos is ‘Excellence and Happiness for All’. Our vision for Music is to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to engage in a range of musical experiences that will develop key transferable skills for life and learning, all pupils to foster connections to develop memory and coordination, all pupils to engage with music actively and creatively, and for collective singing and performances to bring joy and a love for music throughout our school and community.
Music in Early Years
Music in Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, children begin to learn to sing and play with expression from memory and develop the ability to internalise a steady pulse. They explore sounds and music through play and begin to listen to a variety of live and recorded music. They enjoy making, playing, changing and combining sounds in different ways.
Music in Lower Key Stage 2
The children learn to sing and play appropriate material confidently and fluently and how to maintain an independent part in a small group. They listen to and compare a wide repertoire of music and use musical language to describe different styles and structures. They recognise and respond to musically basic symbols from standard notation to changes in pitch.
Music in Upper Key Stage 2
The children explore harmonies and melodies through engaging as a musician. They use rehearsals to develop musical quality and identify areas of improvement. They listen to and discuss a wide repertoire of music and become familiar with the sounds of instruments for different musical genres. They listen to and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions.
