Geography

Intent Statement

In Geography, we follow the National Curriculum 2014. We aim to weave the objectives into cross-curricular themes which are planned with the children’s fascination and interest in mind. Cultural and global studies are an important part of our school curriculum, and feature heavily within our Geographical work.

Vision for Geography

As part of Rossett Acre’s value of ‘Excellence and Happiness for All’, our vision for Geography is to encourage children to become passionate about the world around them, including environmental issues which will impact on their future. Through excellent teaching, creative activities and inspiring lessons we hope to create happy inquisitive explorers who will aspire to travel the world and experience different countries, languages and cultures. We aim to use the latest technology to enable children to explore places in the world which might otherwise be inaccessible to them,

Eco Schools

We are a school which is passionate about environmental issues. The school has an Eco Committee which is comprised of children from every year group (Y1 to Y6). We have achieved our Bronze, Silver and Green Flag awards due to our hard work towards the Eco Schools topics. This year, we are working on projects linked to the topics of Waste, Litter and Energy.

Geography in Early Years

Through their Early Learning Goal of ‘Understanding the World’, the children will learn to describe their immediate environment. They will be able to explain similarities and differences between cultural communities in this country and compare their life in this country to other countries around the world. They will began to develop their geographical and fieldwork skills by developing their directional and positional language and beginning to explore maps.

Geography in Key Stage 1

Children in Key Stage 1 cover their Geography objectives through cross-curricular themes such as Africa and Discovering Harrogate in Year 1 and Deadly 60 and Ready, Steady, Grow in Year 2. They begin to link their learning to six core threads which run throughout the Geography curriculum at Rossett Acre: Sustainability, Human Impact, Place, Location, Climate and Similarities and Differences.

Geography in Key Stage 2

Children build upon their Geography skills and knowledge developed in EYFS and Key Stage 1. They cover their Geography objectives through crosscurricular themes such as Earth Explorers and Where’s the Bear? in Year 3, Environmental Explorers and Ancient Greece in Year 4, South America and Kenya in Year 5 and Egypt and Invaders in Year 6. To support teaching and learning, children have access to up-to-date maps through our subscription to Digimaps and a wide range of high-quality texts linked to their cross-curricular themes.
